Vasa’s torte is an authentic Serbian cake whose recipe dates from as far back as 1908. A romantic legend says that it was created in gratitude of a mother in law to her son in law, Vasa Čokrljan from Paracin, who saved the life of his pregnant, fragile wife Jelena and the baby, as he took Jelena to the famous Viennese doctor, having been told that the childbirth may endanger their lives. Jelena gave birth to a healthy child, and so was born a new, special cake with chocolate, orange and almond flavor, which was named after Vasa. Whether the story is true or not, it doesn’t matter, but it is important that this cake is one of the classics of Serbian cuisine and that every woman should make it at least once in their lives.
